ULQA Scientific is a biotechnology startup focused on developing humanized and animal-free alternatives for modern cell culture systems. Incubated at Atal Incubation Centre–CCMB since June 2025, the company aims to eliminate the dependence on animal-derived components, particularly Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS), in human cell culture and life science research.
Current cell culture methods rely heavily on FBS, a supplement obtained from bovine foetuses, which presents significant ethical, scientific, and reproducibility concerns. India imports over one million liters of FBS annually to support its rapidly growing biotechnology ecosystem. ULQA Scientific addresses this challenge by developing ethically sourced, human-relevant, and scalable alternatives using human platelet lysate (hPL) derived from expired and surplus blood bank platelet units.
The company has developed standardized processing protocols with low batch-to-batch variability and demonstrated that hPL can perform equivalently or better than conventional FBS for multiple human cell culture applications. ULQA Scientific is further building fully defined xeno-free media platforms to support next-generation biotechnology, regenerative medicine, and cell therapy applications.
With expertise in non-animal methods (NAMs) and human cell culture systems, ULQA Scientific seeks to position India as a global leader in ethical and human-relevant biotechnology innovation.
